The Problem

Veterans are more likely to suffer from mental health conditions than the general population due to a range of factors associated with their Australian Defence Force service. Exposure to traumatic events, defence culture and high-stress environments can contribute to mental health issues such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Transitioning to civilian life can also exacerbate these mental health issues.

Many veterans cannot find a suitable psychiatrist to assist them with the assessment services they need for their mental health compensation claims with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, resulting in huge wait times and poor outcomes.

I wanted to provide you with feedback in regard to the psychiatric report provided by Medilinks in regard to one of my clients.

The communication between Medilinks and me was excellent, providing me with clarity in regard to the process, including the means by which I was subsequently able to obtain a copy of the report from DVA.

Your psychiatrist was clearly able to establish a relationship of trust with my client very early in the process and she is a client who readily resorts to defensive mechanisms due to her ADF history

As to the report itself, it has provided DVA with a very thorough understanding of my client’s history and current situation although I have no doubt that should they accept liability for her soon-to-be-claimed mental health conditions they will still require completion of their exhaustive 22 page questionnaires.
The report has enabled me to compile compelling Statements of Attribution that are with my client at the moment for her approval. Once she is happy, I will submit her claims.

Medilinks was founded with a mission to address the mental health needs of Australia’s veterans and Defence personnel, with firsthand experience of the challenges they face informing our approach. We began by tackling the critical shortage of psychiatric assessment services, laying a solid foundation to ensure timely and comprehensive care. Our services, having been delivered primarily through a telehealth model to maximise accessibility, will now expand into a mixed model, with the addition of new clinics offering face-to-face consultations to support personalised access based on individual needs and preferences. As we embark on this new chapter, we are set to expand our services significantly, enhancing the scope and quality of our psychiatric care to better serve our community.
